If you do choose to mod a game, this is where you want to start:

Modding & Commercial Grade:

• Unreal (2004, UT3) Mod community
  • Unreal Wikipedia: includes game mod sample links
• Valve Developer Community | Steam: includes gmaes to play
• Quake 3 Source Code and World Building
• Neverwinter Nights Toolset: includes instructional content

The following are a few quality game creation applications. If you choose not to mod a game these may be a good idea. The basic creaters will be fine for familiar mechanics, but if you want original effects of mechanics you'll want a programmable environment. There isn't much powere behind these, so the end product is of pretty low quality.

 

Demo Development Software (No programming):

• The 3D Game Creator (basic)
• FPS Creator (basic)
• Game Maker (2D - simple)
• Silent Walk FPS Creator (fair, but not really adequate for this course)

Demo Development (Programmable):

• Game Studio (C++ derivative)
• Dim 3: (JavaScript derivative)
• Game Editor: (Cross platform 2D, programming required)

Advanced:

• Blender + whatever game builder
