Game Design Document Samples: Good Samples, Produced Games

The following represent a range of game design documents, from the casual to the formal. You are expected to write something in between. I will provide you with samples in class. In case the in-class lecture on game design documents didn't convince you of their importance, you can read this Adams article entitled "Why Design Documents Matter."

Calling All Cars (html): GDD and final trailer / game play

The calling all cars document is somewhat similar to what is expected of you in the three weeks you will be designing your prototype. This is really a preliminary GDD outlining the designers ideals. This is the "pre-living document" version.

Leisure Suit Larry 7 (PDF): Love for Sail GDD

This is a complete game design document for a produced game. you do not have time to produce a 67 page document, but here's what a GDD looked like in 1996. Sorry, they just keep getting bigger. The Larry document is closer to what you will have when the game is completed (Prototyping and Advanced Prototyping).
